The Winning Attitude - John C. Maxwell

There are countless books on attitude out there. Why do I recommend this one?

One reason: It’s written by John C. Maxwell.

When he came to Singapore as a featured speaker in a business conference, I knew Muslims who paid serious money to attend the conference and hear him speak. And they did so because they knew what he had to share was going to seriously improve their lives.

But does this book have anything to do with the worship ministry? Check out what Maxwell wrote about Psalm 34:1-3:

1) Praise begins with the will (verse 1) – “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” His attitude reflects a determination to rejoice regardless of the situation.

2) Praise flows to the emotion (verse 2) – “My soul shall make it’s boast in the LORD.” Now David is praising the Lord not only because it’s right but because he feels like it.

3) Praise spreads to others (verses 2-3) – “The humble shall hear it and rejoice. O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.” David demonstrates that the desired performance – ‘praise’ – begins with an attitude that is determined to do it.

I’ve read this psalm countless times, and am considered by many to be a worship expert. And yet I find Maxwell’s simple explanation of Psalm 34:1-3 powerful, profound and a necessary admonition for us in the worship ministry.

Another example: Maxwell shares about his experiences speaking at churches to recruit volunteers for those churches. Before he spoke he would ask the pastor concerned how many people he expected to respond to the call. Maxwell would then tell the pastor “more than that number would sign up” and he was right. Every time.

He explains it this way: “What I did know was that the pastor had mentally placed his people into slots and ‘knew’ how they would react during the service. Since I did not know the congregation, my attitude was open and positive toward all of them. I treated the listeners as if they all would respond, and most did!”

The application to us as we serve the congregation of God in the worship ministry is obvious.

Seriously, attitude is so foundational to our Christian walk, not just the worship ministry. This powerful book will do wonders for your own attitude and the attitudes of those you influence through your life and ministry.

But don’t make the mistake of looking at this book and thinking “who do I know that needs this book?” Before I read this book I thought my attitude was good enough and I don’t need this book. I read it for the sake of everyone else, but soon discovered that I need it myself.

So get it, meditate on it and be blessed by this book. I know I have benefited, and I’d love you to benefit from it too!
