Who Can Show Us Any Good?

Psalm 4:6 - Many are asking, "Who can show us any good?" Let the light of your face shine upon us, O LORD. (NIV)

When King David asked "Who can show us any good?" he asked a question as timely today as it was then. In this season, with the world's financial system still in turmoil, poverty and starvation in Third World countries running rampant, new diseases spreading stealthily and our social fabric seems to be unraveling, there seems to be little hope for good in this world.

And that is why he prayed "Let the light of your face shine upon us". As believers, our hope and security does not lie in earthly power or the strength of Man, but in the light, love and strength of God.

Psalm 16:2 - I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing." (NIV)

Because God is our source of good things in this world, we are to come boldly before him and ask for his blessing to be upon us.

Psalm 67:1-2 - May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us, that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. (NIV)

We can be bold in our prayers for blessing, knowing that God desires to bless us in order that his salvation may be shown to the peoples of the world. David paints us a picture of the believer who can rest assured in the goodness and blessing of God.

Psalm 4:7-8 - You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound. I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. (NIV)

God gives us joy, a joy that is greater than what material things (grain and new wine) can bring us. This joy of the Lord is our strength (Neh 8:10) and is medicine to our bodies (Pro 17:22). The Lord also gives us a peace that guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Phi 4:7), a peace firmly anchored in the safety we have in the Lord (Psa 4:8).

May God open the eyes of our heart to perceive the light he has made to shine upon us in Christ (2 Cor 4:6), and may his light give us hope, courage and the peace this world cannot give. In the name of Jesus, Amen!
